Drug and Alcohol Use During Pregnancy
Learn why it is important to talk to your doctor and nurses about drug and alcohol use while pregnant and how they can help you quit.
Why is it important to talk to the doctor about drug and alcohol use while pregnant?
Once you decide to have a baby or find yourself pregnant, you should have an honest conversation with your physician about drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or using any prescription or unprescribed medications/illegal drugs. Everything that you take affects the baby's growth, and it affects the baby after delivery, so that's something that you want to manage with your physician. Your provider and nursing staff want to give you information to help you take care of yourself and your baby. We're not here to judge you or to make you feel bad. We really want you to be honest. We really want you to reach out and get the help that you need.
What should patients who need help quitting drugs or alcohol do?
If you come into the hospital, we can give you community resources and put you in connection with our social service department so that they can send you to the proper people to help you get the help you need.
