Postpartum Depression

Dr. Shah, an OB/GYN with Memorial Medical Group, explains when to be concerned about postpartum depression.

How do you know if a mom has postpartum depression?

The first two weeks is what we consider postpartum blues, which is something normal and physiologically accepted. But if it is extending for more than two weeks then there is underlying depression going on. Maybe the patient is overwhelmed or she's not getting enough help to take care of the baby. Moms are always worried because they always want to do their best. But she has to understand that she's a human being. She's not a robot, and she also needs to rest. She has to come forward and ask for help from the family for a little bit so she can get some sleep. That may also help mom to become a better mother.
